Booking the seat is a different note. This one is the hour you are standing in the station with a foreign passport.
What the station pages say
A station-navigation guide says a foreign passport uses the staffed manual channel at the ID checks, not the automatic gates. Be at the entrance 45–60 minutes before departure at a big-city station, and 30 minutes at a small one. There is nothing to print: the passport is what you board with.

12306’s real-name notice lists the documents the gates can read, including a Chinese ID card and a foreign permanent-resident ID. A foreign passport is a valid ticket document on that page, and it is not in the auto-read list. Other documents go through the staffed manual channel with the original document used to buy the ticket.
Beijing Railway Station’s entry notice, dated 2026-04-01, says passengers who bought with a passport or another non-automatic document enter through the manual channel with that original ID. A paper ticket is a receipt, not the entry credential.

How to use that on the day
- Check the station name on the ticket, not only the city. A 2026 rail map guide says large cities have more than one station, usually the city plus a direction such as South. A 2026 intercity timing note says Beijing South and Beijing West are separate stations.
- Guangzhou is four stations, not one. A 2026 Guangzhou stations guide separates Guangzhou South, Guangzhou East, Guangzhou Baiyun, and Guangzhou Station. A 2026 Guangzhou South guide says to search the station as 广州南 so it is not mixed up with the other Guangzhou stations.
- Shanghai and Shanghai Hongqiao are not the same station. A Shanghai stations guide says the three stations visitors mix up are Shanghai Hongqiao, Shanghai Railway Station, and Shanghai South, and to follow the station name on the booking.
- Security check is compulsory before the platform. 12306’s English FAQ says every passenger and the belongings they carry go through it: put bags in the dangerous goods inspector and walk through the security gate. The same page says that line can queue, so the early arrival covers the security check as well as the ID check.
- Bring the same passport that is on the booking.
- At the ID check, the boarding gate, and the exit, use the staffed manual channel (人工通道).
- At a big station, be at the entrance 45–60 minutes early. A 2026 navigation page says boarding gates close about 3–5 minutes before the train leaves.
