The misunderstanding is that one app, bought at home, punches through every network in China. Traveler threads from 2025 and 2026 do not say that. They say the network you join matters more than the logo on the VPN.
Two different connections
On hotel, café, and mall Wi-Fi, people report Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube failing. On a foreign travel eSIM, using mobile data rather than the building’s Wi-Fi, the same people often say those apps open, because the traffic is not riding the local line. The moment the phone joins the hotel Wi-Fi, they are back inside the filter.
That is why “install a VPN and you are fine” keeps failing in the replies. One city works, the next city does not. One brand works for a companion and not for the person who posted. There is no brand this site will call currently reliable. Treat any VPN as a maybe, and do not build the trip on it.
What to set up before you fly
- Install a travel eSIM while you still have your home connection, and turn it on before you need maps.
- Leave the hotel Wi-Fi for the laptop only if you can live without your usual apps on that laptop.
- Download offline maps and the translation pack. Do not count on the app store after you land.
- Read eSIM and the Great Firewall for the short-stay setup, and the SIM and internet guide if you want the longer options.
If a thread promises a code that “works everywhere this month,” skip it. The posts that match each other are the ones that separate mobile data from local Wi-Fi.
